five tips to balance work and family

I never thought it was possible, but working full-time is getting a bit easier while also taking care of my family!  By the way, the picture really has nothing to do with this post...it just makes me gush so I had to share.  Before going back to work, I'd look at all of the things that would get done around the house and thought it would be a true miracle if I could still keep up with them.  Well, I still find it a miracle if my bathroom is clean, but I'm learning some tricks along the way that have helped me manage my time better so I'm present in my job, with my family, and in the house duties.  There are still a million things to learn, but I wanted to share just a few that have helped me in this transition.

1. It will still be there tomorrow!  I hate this, but it's so true.  A sink of dirty dishes at night isn't my favorite thing, but I'm learning to let it slide one or two nights a week.  Also, running the dishwasher in the morning helps tremendously so that I can easily unload it when I get home.  Our bathrooms are still a mess, but I like to park that into my "weekend" slot in my brain.  "Saturdays are for bathrooms.  Check."  It makes my head spin a little bit less.

2. Unpack everything when you get home.  I find that after picking Nathan up from daycare and coming home, I feel so much better if I unpack my lunch box, pump parts/bottles, Nathan's diaper bag first thing.  After I put them all away my mind feels like there's one less thing to do and I can focus all my energy on Nathan.

3. Turn your phone off or hide it.  Staying "hands-free" is hard but a must when I want to give Nathan all of my attention.  I'm on my email all day, so taking a break for a couple hours won't make the world stop.  Nathan goes to bed at 7pm so I only get a couple hours with him in the afternoon so I have to make them count!

4. Plan and easy Crock Pot recipe a week.  This week our meal plans have been simple yet delicious and filling.  One night we had Eat Live Run's Green Chicken Curry with quinoa.  Sunday is my prep day, so I chopped all of the veggies and made the sauce ahead of time.  Done and done!

5. Give yourself grace upon grace upon grace.  Becoming a mother made me clearly see what exactly grace was, and as I continue on this journey I'm realizing that I need to learn how to give myself more grace than I ever imagined.  This means not beating myself up if I don't get to the floors that night, if the laundry remains unfolded, if the mail I need to send still sits on our table, if Nathan and I haven't read a book in a week, if I choose to sit and have a glass of wine with Daniel instead of doing work.  Grace.  Thank goodness for grace!

These things are small and I'm sure my list will continue to grow.  Staying focused on what is working versus what isn't is powerful and healing.  Stay strong mamas!!

one month

We are a little late, but Nathan turned one month old on Saturday!  I'm still having a hard time typing that sentence.  How did this past month fly by so fast?!?  It is very true that they grow so fast right before your eyes.

In one month we have learned how to love and nurture this precious baby that we prayed for.  It still amazes me that he is really here.  You pray and wait for so long, wondering what they will look like, who they will take after, how they will act, and when they are finally here it still takes a while to sink in.  My absolute favorite part of our day is in the mornings when Nathan wakes up and I'm chaining his diaper telling him "good morning".  He is so smiley and happy, and we just talk and goo at one another.

Nathan is a champ at eating and has had no problem at all gaining weight!  Right at three weeks he weighed 9 lbs 5 oz, so I can only imagine how much he weighs now.

Nathan loves:
baths
a tight swaddle
his soothie
big bounces
sleeping at night in his rock n' play
going for long walks in his stroller
his swing
his changing table

Oh, and he is really good at fighting sleep tooth and nail.  Especially around 9pm when we are exhausted wishing he would fall asleep and stay asleep.

It was a sad day when his newborn clothes no longer fit him.  That same day we had to adjust the straps in his car seat, and also move him to size 1 diapers.  Sniff!

I'd love to say that he is fallen into a nice sleep schedule but every day is different.  There are days when he eats every three hours and falls asleep pretty well after feeding or after a little bit of play time on his mat.  There are other days when he wants to eat every 2 hours and just throws us all for a loop.  At night he is beginning to go about 4-6 hours between his first and second feeding, and then eats every three hours after that.  I must say that he is an angel at nights and falls right back to sleep after eating.

He is so good when we get out of the house and usually sleeps beautifully when we wear him in the Ergo.

And because I can't get enough of him, here is a photo dump of our little guy...

high five for friday

It's already Friday?!?  Our weeks just seem to be zipping on by and I really wish someone would invent a button to stop time.  Nathan is growing like a weed, and the days left before Daniel goes back to work are rapidly disappearing.

Anyways, we had so many exciting adventures this week!

So let's share, shall we….
1) Two words: Mani Pedi.  Techinically this was almost two weeks ago, but I completely forgot to include it last week!  We went and visited my in-laws, and my mother in law and Nana took me out for some self-care time.  Daniel stayed with Nathan while I relaxed in the massage chair and throughly enjoyed every bit of the pampering.  If only manicures lasted forever and grew on trees…sigh!

2) Nathan visited Sea World for the first time!  This was really a trip for us, because let's be real-he won't remember.  In fact, he was passed out for most of the time we were there anyways.  (I quite liked that he slept the whole time, it put my anxious mama heart at ease.)  It has been years since we have been to Sea World together, and as a teacher I receive a free pass!  So we decided to live up the time off Daniel has and soak in the San Diego sunshine.  It was most pleasant because there were hardly any people there.  I can't wait to go over the summer and see Nathan begin to explore as he grows older!

3) We hiked as a family of three for the first time!  Daniel was a champ wearing the Ergo with Nathan inside.  We hiked up to Mt. Woodson from Lake Poway and definitely tuckered all of us out.  I was excited to wear my Refresh Attire tank for the first time and was quickly reminded that my body still has some work to do to get back into shape.  Daniel loves hiking, and even though I'd much rather be running, I thoroughly enjoy the time we get together as a couple.

4) Auntie Kylee visited and met Nathan for the first time!  Kylee is also Nathan's godmother, and it was such a special moment asking her to be a role in his life.  She absolutely loves our little guy to pieces.  We put her right to work with changing diapers and helping with our bath time routine.  There is something so amazing about the people God puts into your life.  We were talking about how over the past 4 years we have known each other, we have both grown tremendously.  Sipping a glass of wine and seeing how our lives have changed is a moment I will cherish forever!

5) Last night I enjoyed a baby-free dinner date with a lovely friend!  At first I felt a bit guilty leaving him with Daniel, but as I was driving to dinner I realized how nice it was going to be interacting in a conversation and staying focused.  I loved every moment of our girl time, but also loved every moment of coming home just in time to bathe and snuggle our little babe.

And just because I can't get enough of him, here's one more picture of our mixed-pattern trending baby...

you know you're a parent of a newborn when...

Our little man is growing so quickly before our eyes and we can barely believe it.  The most incredible part of this journey through parenthood has been seeing Daniel and I change and come together as a team to raise and take care of Nathan.  Our conversations have shifted, our time is spent differently, and our lives have been somewhat turned upside down.  Life is most definitely different than it was a month ago, and we absolutely LOVE it!

There have been some key moments when we realize we are, indeed, parents of a newborn.  Here are some of those moments:

-You high five your spouse and congratulate them on their amazing swaddle action.  Anytime Nathan's arms are still in the swaddle when he wakes up is an accomplishment.

-Laundry is now done more frequently!  The loads are smaller and the items are smaller as well.

-There are at least 6 soothies around the house, and when you need one you can't seem to find one anywhere.  Before we leave the house we double check with one another that we have at least two on hand.

-After 10pm, the only talking involves "SSShhhhhh-ing" the baby or "your turn".

-You think the person who invented the line on the Pampers diapers that turns blue when they are wet definitely deserves to be living very well for the rest of their life.

-Instagram and Facebook now get checked at 12am and 3am during feeding times.

-Our evenings are spent staring at all of Nathan's sweet expressions.

-Getting peed on is nothing compared to what happened the other night.  Right after Nathan's bath I had him all wrapped up in his towel, posed for a picture, and then the sound rang from "down under" signaling that you most definitely did NOT get peed on.  Needless to say, it was a huge "first" as parents and the most comical event to our evening.  We've learned to have a diaper ready immediately after he is taken out of his tub from now on!

reclaiming my identity

We all come with a story.  Our stories share where we have come from, they provide insight as to why we do things the way we do, and they form our identity.  Today I wanted to open my heart up to you today, and share something that is a bit hard on such a public format.  But after reading the below quote I realized that by keeping this to myself I can't help others that might be feeling the same way.  And the below quote by C.S. Lewis opened my eyes to the realization that this just might help one person or allow them to see God working in and through their lives.
Our life group from church recently did an activity that I have done before when going to therapy.  You take chunks in your life (birth-5, 6-10, etc.) and identify some major things that happened to you, whether they were positive or negative.  This can help you identify any patterns that reoccur in your life or your actions or help you to see why you might be feeling a certain way.  After doing this exercise for a second time I realized how much power I give to my story, to things that have happened in my life, and allow them to define who I am instead of letting them go.

In a nutshell here is my story…
My parents divorced when I was a baby, and my mom remarried when I was 7, giving me a step-brother and sister.  Throughout my whole childhood I was the "big sister", always the responsible one, and always feeling the duty to do the right thing.  I constantly struggled with making friends and keeping them, as I became the easy one to pick on in many groups of friends.  My step-dad was an alcoholic.  This became much more pronounced when I was a freshman in high school.  Not only did this put a huge strain on my parents' marriage, but it was also difficult for me as my brother and sister only lived with us on the weekends.  They didn't see all of his behaviors, how he would leave for hours on end and then stumble in at night.  They didn't know a lot of what was going on.  It became so bad that by the time I entered college he was in a car accident, after drinking, and finally went to rehab in order to keep his job.  Throughout this time, I was taking care of my siblings while my mom juggled work and school and her volunteer opportunities.  Our family was crumbling as we dealt with emotional struggles and a sibling that started hurting themselves to deal with the pain.  My dad showed love when he was drunk, not when he was sober.  And I continually had to be strong and keep things together.  When I transferred colleges and moved away my parents divorced, which was the best thing for my mom.  Unfortunately, my dad didn't want anything to do with me and I have continually struggled with his rejection.

There is still a lot more details to this story, but this is how I have where I came from.  I came from a broken home.  I came from a family that struggled with alcoholism.  I came from a dad that rejected me.  I've been the victim, the strong one, the hurt one, the one that didn't deserve love

Well, after doing this activity for the second time I realized something..
I am a new creation.
This story does not have to define me any more.
I have a new identity.

The most amazingly beautiful part of our identity is that it is found in Christ.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.  The old has passed away, behold the new has come"
2 Corinthians 5:17

Yes, I have a past.  Yes, this past is messy.  But Christ has overcome that past and today I don't have to allow that to have power or control over my life.  The rejection and hurt I have felt is something I don't have to allow to hurt me anymore.

Today I can easily see how I'm a stronger woman because of my past.  But, more importantly, I can see that I am MUCH more than this story.  And for this reason, I am ready to reclaim my identify.
No longer am I the rejected and unworthy daughter of an alcoholic, I am the WORTHY and LOVED daughter in Christ.
I am a wife to an amazing husband.
I am a mama to the most precious son.
I am the daughter to the strongest woman I know.
I am loved.

I do have to tell you how our story has ended.  My mom has since remarried to the most loving, wise, humble, and gracious man.  Our family has grown over the years and we all have learned to love this new family, this new identify, this new life we all share together.

and then there were three

Guess who is already one week old?!?!  I can't believe how fast this week has flown by.  I thought I'd share how we are doing as a family of three.  This past week has been absolutely perfect and beautiful. Daniel has 5 weeks off from work, and we are soaking up each moment of it.  I'm forever grateful that he was able to take so much time off, as it is a great asset to have him as we learn how to take care of our little guy and also give me a hand so I can squeeze in some rest.

This past week we have experienced:

-our first smiles (which typically come right after nursing as he starts dozing off into "milk coma" land)

-our first doctor's appointment, which made me want to cry seeing him so sad getting undressed..I can only imagine what shots are going to do to me

-our first trip to Costco!  After seeing the quality of pictures from my mom's DSLR camera we decided that it was about time to make the investment and make Nathan the most photographed baby.  Best.  Purchase.  Ever.

-our first trip to Target!  Of course Nathan loved it just as much as his mommy.

-wearing Nathan in the Ergo Baby and my Happy Wrap, both of which he loves

-I've officially been "fire hosed" and popped on now

-family walks, which are becoming a part of our morning routine now.  Nathan LOVES his carseat, a huge answer to prayers!  We like to walk to the nearby park with our coffee.  Daniel and I love this time because we start going over our day and we find ourselves making a list of all the things we need to do that day or just reminiscing about the birth or talking about marriage.  These moments together I will forever cherish.

-we also got our monitor all hooked up, put Nathan down to sleep, and were able to actually watch a show together and have some "us" time.

Nathan is eating like a champ!  However our nights can get a bit interesting as he tends to get fussy or is wide awake after 8pm.  Throughout the night he feeds every 3-4 hours, so I'm able to get some good chunks of time to rest.  Something I need to consistently tell myself is to rest when he is resting.  I find myself cleaning, picking up, or trying to fit one more thing in before he wakes up so reminding myself to rest is essential right now.

Nathan's natural birth story

Well, we had a baby.  And because it was the biggest accomplishment of our lives, and the most emotional experience I have ever gone through, it is only necessary to write a very long blog post about it for all to read.  Nathan's birth is indescribable at some points, very emotional, and something I hope to never forget in my entire life.  It was beautiful, to say the least, and utterly happened by the grace of God.  God truly had his hand throughout our entire conception and pregnancy, so it is only natural that the Author of our lives continues to show up in our birthing time.   So grab a cup of joe and get comfy…

Monday we had our first non-stress test in the morning.  At this point I was 40 weeks 5 days, and we were pretty anxious to see what the doctor had to say.  My nurse noticed immediately that my fluid levels were low.  Low enough that she started prepping me mentally for induction.  They hooked me up to the monitors to measure Nathan's heartbeat, and even though it was within the average range, it still seemed low to me.  I willed my body to have a contraction as I was on the monitors to see how he responded to them, but we had no such luck.  My doctor decided to have me stay home all day, drink as much water as possible, and rest up.  I had another NST schedule Tuesday at 1:30pm, and if my levels were any lower than I would need to be induced.  So I rested all day long, and had a very strange feeling of peace about our situation.  I was mentally preparing myself for induction, even though we really wanted a natural birth.  Baby was most important!

Monday night around 7pm I started to feel contractions!  They would come about every 25-30 minutes and were lasting, and I was pretty excited that I was finally having some contractions.  We were trying to not get too ahead of ourselves, and were still planning on going to the doctor's appointment the following day.
Tuesday I woke up at 1:30am from the contractions, tried to toss for a bit and eventually got out of bed so Daniel could get some rest.  I started timing them, and they were about 6-7 minutes apart.  They were bearable, and I decided that now was the perfect time to take a shower and slowly start getting ready.  I was able to relax through the contractions, continued tracking them on my phone, and fell in love with the birth ball.  It because my best friend.  I called labor & delivery and they didn't want me to come in until contractions were 3 minutes apart.  By 8am they were anywhere from 3.5-5 minutes apart, and by 9am we decided that it was best to just go to the hospital given that my fluids were low.  We weren't sure how long labor was going to take.  Daniel prayed over us before we left, we grabbed our bags and headed out the door.

We got checked in and I was 3cm dilated, and they measured my fluids.  They were much lower from the day before so they automatically admitted me versus making me walk around downstairs until I was at 4cm.  Enter my nurse: Nicole, aka My Sweet Guardian Angel.  She came in, introduced herself to us, and asked us our birth plan.  She was super supportive of a natural birth and using Hypno Birthing, and ended up coaching us through our labor.  I was on the monitors for 20 minutes every hour, and was given a saline lock vs. an IV (this allows them to insert an IV at any time).  For the first three hours, when I wasn't on the monitors we were walking around the hospital.  Nicole told me to walk through the contractions, and even sway a bit, to help the baby come down into my pelvis.  We didn't time the contractions, but they were getting stronger and I was able to breathe through them and relax into them like hypnobirthing taught me to.  But there was a point where I asked Daniel, "when is active labor going to kick in?" and I started feeling a bit frustrated.

At 2:30pm I prayed that my water would break and that active labor would kick in.  My midwife came in to check me, I was 5cm dilated, 100% affaced, and my water broke!  Talk about an answer to prayers.  We were in active labor!  Contractions were now much stronger, and were coming every 2-3 minutes.  My hypnobirthing tracks were playing in the room the entire time, and this was a blessing.  It calmed everyone down, and my nurses even commented how relaxed they felt listening to them.  Through each pressure wave (contraction) I repeated "release, release, release" and would focus on my body relaxing through the pain instead of seizing up.  When I wasn't on the monitors, I was on the birth ball and even took a hot shower to get some relief between the pain.

At 5pm, my midwife came in to check me again but I declined as I didn't want to be discouraged if I hadn't progressed enough.  The pressure waves were growing stronger, and I just kept breathing through the pain.  Daniel was amazing through the entire time.  When he wasn't rubbing my back, he was repeating "release" over and over to me, and supporting me through the entire time.  Throughout the entire time I was able to stay in my zone, and didn't even notice when people would come in and out of my room.  The pain and pressure were definitely starting to take their toll on me and I kept wondering how much longer this was going to be.  At 6pm, my midwife checked me and I was 7cm and by 7pm I was at 8pm.  This is where things got very intense.

Mind you, there was no medication used at all during this time.  I could feel everything.  And transitional labor became my breaking point.  The contractions were so painful, the worst pain of my entire life, and all of the techniques I had been using to release through the pressure vanished quickly.  The contractions were coming so fast and so strong that I couldn't catch my breath, get a break, or feel a release.  I honestly did not know what to do with my body, and I found myself moaning to cope with the pain.  I hated being on the monitors as the bed was very uncomfortable at this point.  Sitting on the birth ball wasn't helping either, and the pain would not let up.  My mom would be putting warm washcloths on the back of my neck and Daniel would be pushing on my lower back very hard.  I found myself clenched over a trashcan and finally said, "Why did I do this?".  Why did I choose natural child birth?  I honestly didn't think I was going to make it through the pain because it was so strong.

The pressure was getting more and more intense down there, and I was asking my nurses when it was going to be time to push.  They told me I would know when it was time, that it would feel like you needed to poop, and your body would tell you that it was time.  By this point I hit a wall.  The pain was still so intense, and I just didn't think I was going to make it through it.  So I decided to try a hot shower one more time to help things along.  This was at 8pm.  I got into the shower, moaning through the entire process and telling Daniel that I couldn't do this anymore.  He reassured me that I could, that I was almost there.  And then the hot water hit me, and the release that I had been dying for finally came.  The pain finally melted away, and my body finally got a break.  I could breathe and I remember looking right into Daniel's eyes and saying, "I'm back in control".  We even joked a bit and Daniel called me a water buffalo (inside pregnancy joke).  And then the pain and pressure were back and I didn't know what to do with my body.  I found myself on my hands and knees in the shower, moaning, begging myself not to push.  Honestly, I wanted to have that baby in that shower, and I kept wondering if it was time to push.  My shower ended up being 45 minutes long, but it felt like 15 to me.  We didn't know it at the time, but my nurse had come in three times ready for me to push, and let me finish in the shower instead.

When we got out of the shower, I laid back onto the bed and then my body started shaking uncontrollably.  My nurses reassured me that these were "labor shakes" and to let my body shake.  I was in so much pain and now by body was shaking, and I had another break down as I asked the nurse if there was anything they could give me.  I was ready for some drug.  The nurse looked at me and told me it was time to push and the thought of any drugs vanished, it was time! And as much as I wanted to, I was extremely scared to push .  I grabbed the railing and said, "But I don't know how to push my baby out!" almost crying at this point.  They reassured me, and positioned me.  Daniel had one foot and my mom had the other.  As they counted to ten I held my breath and pushed as hard as I thought that I could.  It felt terrible and so uncomfortable.  I didn't feel like anything was happening and it just wasn't clicking for me.  They kept looking at the monitors to watch Nathan's heart beat, which was dropping but I didn't know it at the time.  Honestly, there was so much going on and I only could see Daniel, my mom, and my midwife through everything.  Finally someone said to push like I was doing a really hard sit up.  For some reason that clicked with me, and the head was far enough where I could feel it.  That was my saving grace, and I willed myself to push like my life depended on it.  I remember pushing so hard four more times and then all of a sudden, the most amazing and magical thing happened that still brings me to tears.  Nathan was out, he was placed on my chest, and all of the pain was gone.  All of the pain from the last 20 hours was gone, and my body felt this amazing release that is indescribable.  Nathan was here, on my chest, crying, and he was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.  Nathan was born at 9:11pm, ("just in time for our tax break" Daniel jokes).   All in all, I pushed for 20 minutes.

The emotion that overcame me was surreal.  Seeing our son here, so healthy and strong.  And I looked up into Daniel's eyes and we instantly felt complete.  My body instantly became pretty numb and I didn't feel much that was going on, which I am forever grateful for.  Nathan cried on my chest and I just kept talking to him and stared at him in awe of how absolutely perfect he was.

There are parts of our delivery that I still don't remember because I was so focused on getting through the pain.  Daniel has filled me in on some details, and we keep talking about it in awe of how the body works and how God answers prayers.  Once Nathan was here I was immediately hit with this euphoric adrenaline and I couldn't believe that he was really here, that labor was really over, and that I really did it with no drugs.

After giving birth I can honestly say that any woman, no matter how you deliver, deserves an award for what they go through.  Just carrying a child for 9 months and living in a manner that makes that baby grow so healthy is amazing and is to be praised.  Our natural birth was something we decided we wanted for us, and I can honestly say that I am so glad we chose that path and were able to see it through.  I loved the freedom to walk around, stand up, and be in the shower.   Nathan was so alert when he was born and he even latched on within the first hour.  We are able to look back and see so many blessings through our birth story because we chose the natural route.

Daniel and I are so in love with Nathan.  More than I ever thought possible.  And I am more and more in love with Daniel.  He was my support system and partner through the entire process.  He never left my side, and looking into his eyes after our son was here is something I will never forget in my entire life.  There were specific points within our labor that Daniel would make sure the room was all to ourselves and he would pray over us, and he continued to be the spiritual leader for us.  There are no words to describe how amazing he was, is, and continues to be!
